Council of Europe Secretary General: Arrests in Turkey spread a frightening atmosphere in whole society.

NEWS DESK– The Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland expressed his concern about the continued state of emergency imposed by the authorities of the Justice and Development Party in Turkey, and the campaign of arrests leads to the spread of a frightening atmosphere in the whole society, pointing out that the European Court of Human Rights has been informed of many issues.
He added many of us are concerned about the extent and duration of the state of emergency, and referred to the arrest of journalists, deputies, mayors and human rights defenders.
He called on Turkey to study the requests and appeals of persons concerned to respect the European Convention on Human Rights in order to avoid the overloading of the European Court of Human Rights after it was informed of many cases.
Jagland also stressed the importance of the Constitutional Court, whose authority was questioned last month when Turkish courts objected to a decision on the release of two journalists.
He noted that AKP authorities used the failed coup attempt as it claimed on July 15, 2016 to impose its authority on the country, declaring a state of emergency and arresting politicians and journalists opposed to the party’s policy and eradicating human rights in the country, which is currently governed by emergency laws serving the president Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his policies.
