The Kurdish nationalist and famous leader, Qazi Mohammad was born in 1900 in the city of Mehabad in Mukryan province in Kurdistan.

He was a political and religious leader who became the Head of the Republic of Kurdistan in Mehabad in 22nd Jan 1946, the second modern Kurdish state in the Middle East (after Republic of Ararat).

The republic's official name was "State of Republic of Kurdistan", but was also referred to as "National Government of Kurdistan". Through its one year existence, the republic never quite decided whether it was an independent state or autonomous region of Iran.

The republic introduced Kurdish as the official language, and the language to be used in educational institutions. Some Kurdish language periodicals appeared.
Qazi acted as the president of the Soviet backed Republic of Mahabad. He was also the founder of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran which was a successor of a secret organization of "Komelley Jhíyanewey Kurd".

A year later in 1947, after the Soviets withdrew from Iran, the Kurdish Republic was crushed by Iran's central government. The Iranian military court sentenced Qazi and some of his associates to death, and he was hanged in Chwarchira Square in the centre of the city of Mehabad, on March 30, 1947.

His cousin Mohammed Hossein Saif Qazi who was a minister in his cabinet and his brother Abu-Qasim Saif Qazi were also executed.
